I remember the days when we would just scetch. Someone said, you don't have a telly. No i don't have a telly, i do stuff. One of my favourite stuff is drawing - amongst others. I make stuff, sometimes by hand, sometimes by computer. Its just easier that way. To produce as well as consume. If I only consumed without making things to put out there id feel terribly empty, producing makes me feel like a contributing part of the world, full os possibilities.

Prepping up for the third GeekGirlMeetup.com we just made new badges. This year we will be making a Crowdsourced Cahrity Hack for Action Aid, and accompanied by the theme "Skill and Love" for starters. My co-arranger Maria Söderberg has been busy with the eminent program and we have everything from VC investors talking about the ins and outs earning that cash thru sales, as well as iPhone developers showing us the nitty gritty of Objective C.

As always the whole un-conferance is made by many people, amongst those Heidi Wold working hours after work, taking time make this happen. As always, every time we see the results spread, to Öresund, Göteborg, Malmö by people like Anna Oscarsson, Henriette Weber, Kristin Heionen.

The makings of a campaign

My old office pal and friend Carlos Rojas had an idea of how to make dads stay at home, and take out their materinitydays, as long as the kidds moms, with an end goal of gender equality, something that we value highly here in Sweden. So I made some scetches and produced the campaign with a team of skilled and fun loving php & flash developers and designers. Here are the results and shortly a bit of translated texts from the campaign. Happy reading!

It´s 51 years left untill men will take out as much maternity leave as women, once they have children. Out of the 480 days dedicated to payed maternity leave that a couple is entitled to (in Sweden), men use 22% of all days, wich is only about 4 months out of the 20months a couple has to share (and are entitled to by law). This campaign aims to encourage more dads to take more materinty leave. Its something good for yourself and your family, but it also has a (healthy) effect on Sweden reaching is goals with working towards achieving gender equality.

The second really great thing about the campaign is the perspective it gives, when you are asked; how long are you staying home with your kid?

Our aim was to reach as many as possible so on one end we have a "Gravidolizer" that allow the dad to upload a picture of himself, Gravidolize himself, and when the belly is in place, post the image to Facebook, or Tweet it with a text saying "Im pregnant [link]"#klartjagskavarahemma" so that we could search it thru the realtime searchengine Twingly.

The link takes you to the campaign, and shows the picture of the dad in a gravidolized state. The message can also be posted on facebook, or be sent as a message.

In ordear to push the site to other sites, as far as possible, we used badges, that users can embedd the message and spread it as widely as possible and show their support.

Hejja, it feels as if we have made the world a little better!

1. Mention an important happening in your field that people will remember 2009 for and why?
The rise of the activating Un-conferances in Sweden. The year started of with Ted Valentins 24 Hour Business Camp, was followed up with the theme "Action" at Reboot (in Denmark), SSWC an island outside Blekinge on the coast of Sweden. Even Geek Girl Meetup was aiming to more than just inspire, it activated several spinn-offs, such as WordPress-girls, Mini-Geek, GGM Malmö and GGM Göteborg.
Henriette Weber released the book "Return on Involvement", the bible of how to interact with your your users online and why active invovlent gives, ROI.

2. What is the most important thing that happned to you personally in 2009 (choose work related or private)?
It was a demanding year, yet productivity exceeded inspiration, the release of RunAlong.se and the co-creation of Geek Girl Meetup.

3. One sentence that describes the technical development right now.
Facebook Connect became the peoples service.

Is so dark in Sweden, its S.A.D, i was skyping with a girl from London and she was amazed about how dark it was outside the window, and it was at the time (about three weeks ago) only five in the afternoon. Today it turned dark at 15:30. Thats when you get one of this. Its survival, not advertising (then i wouldnt pay femtonhundra for it).

Social Running, that is what we´re up to.

The idea of Run Along, starting with a need off course!

I don´t dare to run at night. I can become a doc or lawyer if i want to but the thought of not daring to go out running alone, without having the experience ruined by looking over my shoulder in the dark became a bit to much of a contradiction in this so called modern world.

So I did an analyze of the sites out there, maybe i could fins some social sites for running?

I found that the site that are out there, only measure you km/miles, your calories (who cares) and possible how many % of your shoes you´ve yo have used up (smell the deadbeat). Conclusion, they are flat, flat maybe some are pretty, but oh so flat.

Its just doesn't cut it for me. Just not good enough…

So i came up with RunAlong, a social running site. A bit like Face book, but the supports g-maps and acts like a smoother MeetUp. It allows you to invite your friends to runs, you create a run, invite your friends, and soon you can see who is joining and who's not.

That easy, no more mess with sms/texts and mails keeping track of stuff.
Just life made simpler.

I have folder called Soul. I save links and mails in there that i pick up when things get difficult or when im tired. This one reminds me of the adventure that im on, and it reminds me how to prioritize.

I have a brilliant team, maybe in a differant constellation that what were used to, our/RunAlongs Advisory Board, researcher PhD Robin Teigland, devteam, bloggers (Louise Hamilton and Ella Frenning), interns, and non the less all the people in this community of start-ups that support each-other here in Sweden, from south to capital Stockholm.

Sometimes it makes me wonder how we ended up here, is it a lucky balance of all the three ingredients that Richard Florida talks about in his book "The rise of the Creative Class"? Need? My immigrant parents determination? Luck? Lust for Adventure? Maybe. Probably. Definately probably. (or read an article)

I wont be participating in the 24hour Buiness Camp this year as im busy handling startup that i had a project there this January.

But now, back to Work.

This is the theme for GeekGirlMeetup.com that i wrote in swedish. This is a brief translation from Swedish to English to you billinguals.

Abstract on winning
To win is to take yourself somewhere where you haven't been before. To win can be luck if your are throwing dice, but for most it's the opposite of loosing. Can one win by daring to loose? Can you win without loosing a few times. Is it possible that winning and loosing is closely related. To win can be, daring to loose and acknowledge that it's okay. To win is to overcome ones fear, to win is to keep going even if everybody says it's not possible.

To win is to pass the finishing line, before everyone else, faster than everyone else, because of the dedicated work you put in to whatever you are doing when everyone else was not, because you believe in whet you do. It's about daring to not do like everyone else.

To lead yourself from point A to point B, mentally of physically, is leadership, not management. Management is doing chores that you have done and mastered before.

To lead is to win. To win is to stop making yourself smaller than you are. To win is to be as big as your really are. To win is loving respectlessness.

During the TedxStockholm Hans Rosling gave a talk on why we cant ignore the poorest billion on earth, and with boxes he vizualises how poverty is being overcome when emerging markets move into wealth.

Also not the Business Week has a very good article on "Why the Statistics Point Toward Progress", an interview with Hans Rosling.

If anybody has missed any of his earlier work, you can catch up here.

Further more, also David Bismark gave a great talk on voting systems, and Kristina Höök from Stockholm University/Mobile Life Center gave a talk, amongst many. At the end of TedxStockholm, the host Theo Hären suggested that we should be the city that hosts most Tedx´s in the world as we are suppodly the most creative city in the whole world, according to Richard Floridas book "The rise of the creative class". Its def worth a shot!

Three radically diffrent visulizing services that make my heart skip another beat.

First out this spring was Social Collider, mapping you tweet interaction with your fellow tweeters, something earlier not done, very intresting. Basically you type in your Twitter nameand the time period you want to visualize and it starts mapping upp connection, retweets etc. Created by RCA MA student Sascha Pohflepp in collaboration with Karsten Schmidt aka Toxi/PostSpectacular as part of Google’s Chrome Experiments.

The second more recent is a visual search engine, Spezify.com, that in an organic way displays images of the searchterm, no list required. There have been a few of theese attempts before, where API´s have been used to display a searchterm, but nothing of this well precized grattitude. Created by Felix af Ekenstam and Per Persson on their spare time, the boys have done have completed their first off-work project. Go search yourself!

Our GeekGirl Meetup was held at Lydmar as usual, and we got some work done, and a lot of ideas came in for the event that we will be hosting on the 28th of march 2009. Talks, Sessions and Challenges will be held about themes such as Start-ups, web, design and code. If anyone has suggestions of topics, potential speakes, ideas… please send us a mail, we´d love to hear!

Looking forward to 24h Business Camp, think its a really neat initiative, and i'm looking forward to some nice days out at Hasseludden with bunch of creative people. Follow the live stream.

New work; work shift, i have ended two and a half years with the development and Communications department at IFL at the Stockholm Schoool of Economics, developing their internal and external media strategies. I continue my new work with Starring working as a planner and interaction designer.

Start-up; yes, i´ll be working part-time with my start-up, very nice indeed.

Autonomous Newspaper

I demoed the Autonomus Wallpaper in Denmark for the creative people from the Interactive Institute, at Smart Spaces, a conference and exhibition on sustainable living created by Innovation Lab.

The Autonomous Wallpaper by Sara Ljungblad projects a flower pattern based on a the pixel parameter from the images sent in by bluetooth to the Wallpaper.

While at the conference i met up with Johan Thackara, from the Doors of Perception, who gave me som valuble input on userdriven development, and he showed me som eintresting work they have going on in England with some of the Dott07 projects, brilliant work.

Geek Girl Meet-up

If you always feel like the lonliest geek girl at the tech conferances, and you start suspecting something awfully old fashioned when theres 80-95% men around you, you do something about it, and that thing is Geek Girl Meet Up.

Together with Andie Nordgren(consultant, Emmy-winning producer, webbie), Mimi Du(Stardoll, business-developer, techie-girl-w0nder) we want to create a monthly tech-event for girl geeks focused on tech, start-ups and code and webb in an relaxed atmosphere. Geek Girl Meet-up will be held once a month.

For spring 2009 we´re planning a whole day event, untill then were going to have a meeting talk about how we want it to be, so please join us for a beer and create the future along with us as Lydmar Hotels bar on thursday the 27th. The Smaller events will be held once a month more or less. Sponsors anyone? let me know.

I was just telling a friend about a movie that inspired me a great deal when i was a teenager, like around 15-16, i rented it at No 1 Video on Götgatan when there was still VHS around, and now they don't have it anymore, and i was kind of crying crocodile tears, cause i couldnt find it anywhere, but i just did!

And its still as relaxed and slow as i remember it to be, and it's such a great dokument of time, about my favourite things in life, cities, filosophy, identity and some of the everything, that happens when you scratch the surface of fashion.

And off course, non the less, i recently found out, it's of one favourite (Yohji) about another, Wim Wenders.

Did anyone read that book "Things That Make Us Smart: Defending Human Attributes In The Age Of The Machine" with that 80'ties book cover? Well, he was right, and producers that make things for real life should have a go at that book to, bacause its simple math, that could boost sales.

Here's an example of the San Francisco metro tickets, One for a day, a buck fifty, now thats the way, not to mention they are pretty.

Todays (Stockholm-metro)tickets for the metro, paw you two units to go one stop, or to move freely anywhere within the A-zone. I want them to paw me one, for one, because it feels better that way. Maybe i would like the metro a bit more and spend a bit more money that way, because this way, i take the bike instead.
